Thomas Deffieux received his Ph.D. degree in 2008 from the University Paris-Diderot in Paris, France, for his work, directed by Mickael Tanter, on ultrafast imaging and quantitative elastography techniques such as shear wave imaging and shear wave spectroscopy at the Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustique (ESPCI, Paris, France). He kept working on clinical studies involving viscoelasticity while working on the physics, signal processing and implementation of those imaging modalities.

He has since been working on blood-brain barrier opening at the Ultrasound and Elasticity Imaging Laboratory (UEIL) at Columbia University, New York, NY, on simulations of new transcranial focalization schemes applied to BBB opening and in vivo detection of stable and inertial cavitation with a PCD.

He is now working on new approaches for the study of the brain based on ultrasound neurostimulation, functional ultrasound imaging and elastic tensor imaging.
